Hormone-free contraception with copper

A hormone-free contraception takes advantage of the effects of natural copper. Regardless of the specific product, copper particles are released into the womb. This reacts to the copper, which prevents an egg from nesting and limits the motility of the sperm. Below you will find various hormone-free methods of contraception with copper, which are also an alternative to the pill.

Copper based birth-control is also an ideal hormone-free emergency contraception, which is possible up to 5 days after unprotected sex.

Gynefix copper IUD (copper chain) >>

How it works
The copper chain is anchored in the uterine wall with a nodule. A thread with 4-6 (depending on the length of the uterus) copper elements is attached to this node, which hangs freely in the uterus.
Advantages
Very effective contraception over a long period of time. No hormones are released. Bleeding disorders are very rare compared to other copper based products.
Side effects
There is a very low risk (1-2 cases of 1000 users) that the copper chain moves through the wall of the uterus into the abdomen. It is possible that the chain will fall out (2% of users, mostly in the first 6 months).
Effectiveness
Very high effectiveness with a Pearl-Index of 0.1 - 0.5

How it works
Dynamic contraceptive system that unfolds into a 3D ball shape in the uterus. No separate attachment is required, holds by the ball shape alone. Efficacy up to 5 years.
Advantages
Very efficacy for a long time.
Side effects
The IUB may fall out in about 2 of 100 cases. Prolonged and / or heavy bleeding may occasionally occur.
Effectiveness
According to manufacturer information 0.5 - 0.7

Copper coil IUD

How it works
The copper coil IUD is inserted into the uterus and is held by its "arms" in the upper part of the uterus. The products of different manufacturers differ mainly in shape and size. This makes them suitable for different users depending on the size and shape of the uterus.
Gold IUDs add a gold alloy that has an antibacterial effect to the copper base material. Copper IUDs and the contraceptive effect usually last 5 years, after which the IUD is removed again.
Advantages
Very good and long-term contraceptive effect without hormones. Gold spirals can reduce period pain and prevent infections.
Side effects
Increased bleeding (duration, longer) is possible. Slipping or falling out is also possible with copper coils.
Effectiveness
High effectiveness with a Pearl-Index of 0.9 - 3.0
